One of the most common questions I've received over the years has been enquiring how best to print a map. The challenge is that most maps are larger than your average piece of (A4/Letter) paper and if they are scaled to fit then they become unreadable.
To that end, I've been working on a new PDF export mechanism for iThoughtsX (and in future iThoughts iOS.) I'm calling it 'Poster Printing'.
The idea is that when you export a map in PDF (for subsequent printing), it will break the map up into pages (A4, Letter etc) which can then be printed out and sticky taped together to form a single 'poster' of the map. The user defines the maximum number of pages to use (e.g. 4 x 4 grid) and iThoughts does the rest. See below for the export options:
If we then view the resultant PDF in 'contact list' view, we can see the pages that have been created.
The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed the slight margin on the right and bottom edges. This is optional and enables you to 'overlap' the pieces of paper - making it easier to assemble into a poster.
In the above case, I forced the map to 'scale up' and best fill a grid of 4x4 (max) A4 sized pages. Works the other way too. If the map were to exceed 4x4 pages then it would be scaled down. If you don't want any scaling - just 'actual size' - then you can set the max grid size to 10 x 10 and tell it not to scale up.
Please see here for the PDF file in the demo above.
Ideally I'd insert a photo here of the printed and assembled poster - but have you seen the price of ink !!!
Hoping to release this soon after Christmas...
